About Me

I'm Ben, the founder of Heathside Woodworks. I design and build bespoke furniture and lighting from my workshop in North London, combining sustainable materials with storytelling.

My Story

For over a decade I served as a Royal Engineer Officer in the British Army, specialising in Bomb Disposal. During that time I delivered engineering and construction projects around the world.

After leaving the Army, I qualified as an electrician before taking a job as a producer. Surrounded by cameras, creatives and storytellers, I found myself wanting to create things of my own rather than simply telling other people's stories.

That outlet became Heathside Woodworks.

What started as a hobby quickly grew into a passion for designing and building bespoke furniture and lighting. I'm particularly drawn to reclaimed and urban timber, not just because it's a more sustainable way to work, but because every piece of wood has a history. A knot, a scar or a weathered edge tells a story that simply doesn't exist in mass-produced furniture.

Today, Heathside Woodworks focuses on creating thoughtful, functional pieces using reclaimed materials and London's urban timber wherever possible. Sustainability plays a role in every design decision, from the materials I choose to the way each piece is built.

Alongside making, I document the process through photography and YouTube, sharing the successes, mistakes and stories behind each project. For me, the finished piece is only part of the story. The journey from raw material to finished object is just as important.

For every commission, a tree will be planted locally and you'll receive a photo book documenting the creative process, allowing you to trace your piece from tree to table.
